Photosynthesis mainly takes place in young-maturing leaves. Older leaves
and those partly shaded only photosynthesize a little, typically drawing on
young-maturing leaves for their survival.
Therefore,
pruning of old, overcrowded or damaged growth will enable the following:
1. Make
room for new growth that will photosynthesize more effectively.
2.
Create better airflow allowing carbon dioxide, temperature and humidity to
be optimized throughout the foliage.
3. Buds
and fruit will ripen more quickly if they are exposed to the light.
Note, do not
over-prune and risk depriving the plant of leaves that might be required for
a necessary growth spurt.
