The
role of phosphorus and potassium
Potassium (K): Large quantities of
potassium are required in the growing points of the plant, in the leaves
and in the cell sap:
+ Lack of potassium will reduce yield and
quality. Used in the opening of the stomata in the leaves and hence its
role in regulating the rate of transpiration (i.e nutrient and water
uptake).
+ Vital in the production and movement of
carbohydrates and nitrogen.
+ Control of pH in the cells, and activation of
a number of enzymes.
